My uncle has always dreamed of opening a little cafe in our hometown. I think it is because there used to be one there back when he was a kid and he has a lot of fond memories of it. So, when he retired it was no surprise to any of us when he announced that he had found a building and was going to open a diner in the town.
We all pitched in to help him get the place ready for business. My brother and I helped him renovate the inside of the build, which used to be a salon, so that it looked more like a country cafe. My mom, who has a background in advertising, took care of designing the menus, the logo and marketing materials. And my sister was in charge of all the important business stuff, like getting bank accounts and business licenses all squared away.
Since our town did not have a cafe, the business was a success pretty much right away. My dad was loving it too. We all did, which is why we helped out in the cafe when we could. I was actually there one afternoon when a customer slipped and fell while coming in.
My uncle rushed out to help him and we called an ambulance since he hit his head when he fell. A few weeks went by after that without any of us thinking about the accident and then we got the bills. The business was being sued to cover the cost of the medical bills for the guy that fell. When my dad saw this, it just about broke his heart because he thought it meant the end of the cafe. He gave the information to my sister, since she takes care of all the finances. She told him not to worry about it because the public liability insurance would cover it. None of us knew what she was talking about until she filled us in on the types of things she takes care of for the business. And making sure it is protected from liability issues is one of those things. It was a relief for all of us that my dad wouldn’t lose the diner as a result of the accident.
