Liability Insurance Coverage Can Keep Your Family Out Of The Hole

My uncle Mike has his own excavation business. When I was younger I always thought it was so cool that he got to ride around on bulldozers and backhoes all day. Of course, now that I’m older, pushing around dirt all day does not seem quite as appealing. He loves it though.

Mike primarily works for individuals and not companies. This means that he does things like digging holes for swimming pools and helping people clear land for building new homes. His wife, my aunt Annie, is an office manager for a local luxury appliance store. She’s been working there for as long as I can remember. Thanks to all that experience as an office manager, she also manages my uncle’s business. Well, at least the business side of things for him. He plays in the dirt and she makes sure all the bills get paid, that the liability insurance policy is up-to-date and things like that.

Last summer, he was working for a family to clear a bunch of land for them. They owned a lot of land that had trees on it but had decided to clear it for farming purposes. So, uncle Mike was spending his days on the bulldozer clearing all those trees.

One day, the family’s dog got loose and took a beeline for where Mike was working. Bulldozers are pretty loud, so he didn’t hear the dog barking as it approached. That’s how he accidently hit the poor dog. The family wasn’t home, so uncle Mike rushed the dog to the local animal hospital immediately. While injured badly, the dog was still alive. The vet was able to take care of the injuries so that the family could take the dog home.

My aunt and uncle didn’t even have to worry about the pricey vet bills. Sure, they were liable for them, but my aunt Annie always made sure that my uncle was covered by a public liability insurance policy. This means that they didn’t have to pay out of pocket for the vet bills because the policy covered them.
