Liability Coverage Helped Me Go To My Dream Uni

When I was 17 years old, I learned the importance of being prepared for accidents. The funny thing about accidents is that they come in many different varieties. And they can occur to anyone at anytime. They can be your fault or someone else’s fault. Since you don’t know when one will present itself, you just have to prepared. Public liability insurance is the best way that you can do that, no matter what your situation might be.

My parents are actually where I learned this very valuable lesson. You see, they helped me to purchase a my first car at that age. It wasn’t anything special, just a little two door coupe. It was mine though and I loved it. I drove it everywhere, often inventing errands to run just so I could drive it more.

Before letting me purchase the car, my parents sat me down to make sure that I understood the responsibility. We discussed things like traffic violations, liability in accidents and auto insurance. I didn’t think they were ever going to let me on the road! But, when I was involved in an auto accident, I suddenly realized the importance of that conversation.

I knew the accident was my fault. I had pulled out into traffic when I wasn’t supposed to, which caused the two cars to hit. One of the cars hit me as well. Luckily, no one was hurt too bad. One of the drivers had a broken arm, but thankfully nothing more serious. And I had managed to escape with just a few bruises.

As expected, I was deemed liable for the medical bills related to the broken arm. This wasn’t a surprise to me, or my parents. When the bills arrived, my dad showed them to me, which really drove home the importance of the extra liability insurance coverage. The amount was more than four years tuition at the private college I planned on attending. Without the liability coverage, I would not have been able to go to the uni of my choice. In fact, my parents would have been out even more money.

Don’t Lose Your Australian Business Because You Don’t Have Insurance Coverage

Starting a new business on your own can be both an exciting and stressful endeavor. When I decided to start my own used book shop, on the idyllic NSW north coast, all I knew was that I loved books and couldn’t imagine anything more fulfilling than spending all day surrounded by them. This meant that I had to do loads and loads of research before embarking on this journey. I’d never taken any business classes, so I was pretty clueless.

I quickly learned that starting a business wasn’t as simply as getting a shop and opening the doors for customers. I befriended a retired shopkeeper and got lots of advice over many cups of coffee. He taught me about all of the important things I’d need, such as licenses and public liability insurance. He also taught me about preparing financial documents and hiring staff. I credit him as the reason that my bookstore has been open for all these years.

You see, I could have lost the store and most everything I owned if not for his good advice. One spring about four years after opening the shop, a customer got hurt while inside. I used to keep a ladder in the store for reaching the high shelves. It was only for staff use, but one of my customers got impatient and climbed up it on their own. And you know what happened next. The books she was reaching for fell off the shelf on top of her, which caused her to tumble down onto the floor with said books. It wasn’t a long fall, but it was enough to cause injury.

Falling from a ladder on top of some books can result in a broken arm and leg. And broken bones are not cheap. Since the accident occurred in my bookstore, my business was deemed liable for her bills. It made no difference that she climbed the ladder on her own. Fortunately, that business liability insurance coverage paid for all the bills. Without it, I just might have lost the business and my assets.

Liability Insurance Coverage Can Keep Your Family Out Of The Hole

My uncle Mike has his own excavation business. When I was younger I always thought it was so cool that he got to ride around on bulldozers and backhoes all day. Of course, now that I’m older, pushing around dirt all day does not seem quite as appealing. He loves it though.

Mike primarily works for individuals and not companies. This means that he does things like digging holes for swimming pools and helping people clear land for building new homes. His wife, my aunt Annie, is an office manager for a local luxury appliance store. She’s been working there for as long as I can remember. Thanks to all that experience as an office manager, she also manages my uncle’s business. Well, at least the business side of things for him. He plays in the dirt and she makes sure all the bills get paid, that the liability insurance policy is up-to-date and things like that.

Last summer, he was working for a family to clear a bunch of land for them. They owned a lot of land that had trees on it but had decided to clear it for farming purposes. So, uncle Mike was spending his days on the bulldozer clearing all those trees.

One day, the family’s dog got loose and took a beeline for where Mike was working. Bulldozers are pretty loud, so he didn’t hear the dog barking as it approached. That’s how he accidently hit the poor dog. The family wasn’t home, so uncle Mike rushed the dog to the local animal hospital immediately. While injured badly, the dog was still alive. The vet was able to take care of the injuries so that the family could take the dog home.

My aunt and uncle didn’t even have to worry about the pricey vet bills. Sure, they were liable for them, but my aunt Annie always made sure that my uncle was covered by a public liability insurance policy. This means that they didn’t have to pay out of pocket for the vet bills because the policy covered them.
